SOF Integrated Wellness Foundation (SOFIWF) was established in July 2021, because of lack of accessible and affordable mental health services for the BIPOC community, in London, Ontario and beyond. Unfortunately, only a few people in the BIPOC community are getting the support they critically need. Many from this community often to do not have health care benefits because of lack of gainful employment. Some have benefits that can cover only a few sessions, leaving them stranded with little or no racial based help.
Clearly, mental health challenges and mental illnesses have become a critical issue in our community that demands urgent attention. Those who are suffering from mental health issues are vulnerable, isolated, and are invisible to people around them. They encounter many other social and emotional challenges such as discrimination, racism and oppression, which only serve to make their condition worse.
Also, mental health issues often go unaddressed because of stigma, lack of awareness, and the inability to access the right resources. This is where culturally sensitive education comes in. Education can empower not only those who are vulnerable to mental illnesses or suffering from it, but also those around them. It is this understanding that set us on a mission to tackle mental health issues through education-based strategies. SOFIWF was established to breach these gaps, by providing mental wellness education, sensitization, and provide funds for individuals who are in desperate need of help.
